Joel completed his BSc in Biology at the University of British Colombia in 2022 and joined the Swayne Lab as a senior research assistant the same year. During the last year of his undergrad, Joel directed his interests on the study of Huntington’s disease molecular pathology in Dr. Lynn Raymond’s laboratory at the Djavad Mowafaghian Centre for Brain Health. With a background in electrophysiology and calcium signalling in the brain, Joel employs calcium imaging techniques to study the effects of ankyrin-B abnormalities on spontaneous calcium activity in developing neurons and cardiomyocytes. In his spare time, Joel is involved in his indigenous community, maintains his private pilot licence, and trains to compete as a Division 1 soccer player.
