Actions-Challenges and Solutions:

Local Food

Challenge: On average food travels 2, 500 KM by trucks, ships and airplanes before it gets to your plate.

Solution: Once a week, eat 2 foods that are produced in BC (make sure to read labels and or ask at local farmers markets)

Meat-Free

Challenge: Meat production is responsible for 18% of global greenhouse gases, water pollution, deforestation, soil erosion and habitat loss with beef responsible for most of this.

Solution: Once a week have a meat-free day (what are some examples of alternatives to meat?)

Tasty Left-Overs (Food waste)

Challenge: about 40% of our waste in the home is food waste.  If this does not end up in the compost it can cause green house gas emission.

Solution: Compost your food and use left-over food for lunches, snack and to add to other meals.

Info to put up on the board for students:

GHG’s=Green House Gases (CO2 and Methane)

CO2= Carbon dioxide
