There is no reference to the name that can be securely cited as the first; however in May 1918 Canadian and American newspapers reported that many people in Spain were falling sick from a \u201cstrange new disease.\u201d<a href=\"#_edn1\" name=\"_ednref1\">[1]<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Although Spain was not the only nation affected, newspapers were obliged not to report anything that could distress either the soldiers or civilians of the combatant countries. Neutral Spain was free of such restrictions and therefore a convenient culprit. In June 1918 <em>The Times<\/em> (London) reported on what it termed the Spanish epidemic.<a href=\"#_edn2\" name=\"_ednref2\">[2]<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/spanishflu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3529\/2014\/03\/TimesLondon19180603-all1.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-1193 alignleft\" style=\"border: 10px solid white;\" src=\"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/spanishflu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3529\/2014\/03\/TimesLondon19180603-all1.png\" alt=\"TimesLondon19180603-all\" width=\"274\" height=\"780\" srcset=\"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/spanishflu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3529\/2014\/03\/TimesLondon19180603-all1.png 274w, https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/spanishflu\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3529\/2014\/03\/TimesLondon19180603-all1-105x300.png 105w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 274px) 100vw, 274px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In its February 1919 edition <em>Maclean\u2019s Magazine<\/em> suggested that it was the Germans who had named it Spanish in order to pre-empt the use of its proper name which was the German plague.
