Trumpeter, 5th Regiment Canadian Garrison Artillery
An apprentice machinist, 17 years old, he was born in Victoria on September 30, 1901, only son of Mrs. Fanny Carlow McLaughlin and Mr. Charles Gilbert McLaughlin, of 1039 Yates Street. He had two younger sisters, Grace and Gilberta. His father was a barber. His parents came from Nova Scotia.

Mr. McLaughlin enlisted with the 5th Regiment C.G.A. on January 3, 1917 and took up residence at Work Point Barracks, Esquimalt in company with Victoria’s garrison force of army artillery manning local coastal defences. The 5th Regiment Band was a local legend with roots in the 1860s.
William McLaughlin died on October 18, 1918 at Barracks Hospital, Work Point of pneumonia following influenza.
