A shipwright by trade, 27 years old, born May 22, 1892 in Salt Lake City, Utah, the only son of Mr. and Mrs. James Fraser Maclachlan. Attended school in Utah, in London, Ontario and MacLeod, Alberta. The family moved to Victoria in 1912 and lived in Fairfield. He was drafted into the Canadian Expeditionary Force on May 2, 1918 and in August travelled to St. John’s, Quebec for training. In a letter home dated September 22, Albert complained of “a slight indisposition.” Spanish flu, The Daily Colonist reported, “had evidently broken out in K Company to which he belonged.” He died on September 29, 1918 at the Isolation Hospital, St. John’s of broncho-pneumonia following influenza.
Mr. Maclachlan’s funeral procession on October 7 started from the family residence at 73 Moss Street, Victoria. The Colonist noted “delegations from the Victoria and Queen City Chapters of the I.O.D.E. [Imperial Order Daughters of the Empire], Daughters of the Nile and the Order of Eastern Star. A firing party under Sergeant Hale was supplied from Signal Hill, and the band attended from Willows Camp. The casket, covered with the Union Jack, besides many beautiful floral tributes, was conveyed to Ross Bay Cemetery on a gun-carriage.” The pallbearers were Gunners A. H. Wilson, A. G. Harvey, A. B. Carson, W. Jull, A. W. Small, W. H. Fletcher.
