My pronouns are she/her.

I am a settler on lək̓ʷəŋən land and am grateful to the Songhees and Xʷsepsəm peoples on whose land I am working and raising my family.

My maternal family is from England and the Alderville First Nation, Mississauga Anishinabeg of the Ojibway Nation. My paternal family has lived in Victoria for 4 generations and came from England.

I got my start in lab work with the Applied Chemistry and Biochemistry Diploma program at Camosun. This led to an internship at a local biotech where the lab techs were making much more an hour what I was with my college diploma, so I came up to UVic to finish my undergrad in biochem!

The network I developed while completing my courses at UVic led to a position in the lab where I was offered a grad student position. My  research looked at the interactions between the zinc fingers of a transcription factor involved in pediatric kidney cancer and it’s RNA splice variants. When I finished my Master’s, I worked in the biology department looking at retinal development. Then I got a job as a virologist with the CFIA.

I have worked in various roles at UVic since 2009, and I and grateful to work with the inspiring BCMB students, faculty and employers as part of the nationally recognized program for preparing career-ready students.

Brian Tucker, Co-op Coordinator

Office: BWC A241
In person drop in: Wednesdays 3-4

Originally from Ontario, I moved to Vancouver Island in the summer of 2001. In the time since, I have spent my days raising children, planting gardens, forming community, learning about the local peoples and land, and pursuing an education and livelihood. As a settler on lək̓ʷəŋən land, I’m so grateful to be here and to able to call Victoria home.

I have been part of the UVic community for more than 20 years. I completed both a BA and MA in geography and greatly valued my time as a co-op student. For the last 13 years I have worked here on campus. I got my start as a Student Recruiter, helping to inform prospective undergraduate and graduate level students of their options at UVic. While in this role I regularly discussed how UVic’s commitment to experiential learning opportunities sets it apart from other institutions. I spoke of how my experiences as a co-op student helped me understand my potential as a professional while still completing my degree, and prepared me well for transitioning into the workforce once I graduated.

I have now been in the role of Co-op Coordinator for more than 2 years. I cherish the opportunity to work with aspiring and inspiring science students as they pursue their dreams and look for ways to leave a positive impact on our community and our world, while also supporting businesses large and small as they look for the right talent to help them reach their organizational goals.
