Friendly Space Policy

Thank you for joining us at the first UVic Science Communication conference which aims to leverage the voices of Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) speakers from STEM disciplines.

UVic libraries science communication conference is committed to providing an inclusive and safe digital environment for all participants regardless of ethnicity, religion, ability, physical appearance, or gender. Our goal is to provide a safe space that fosters open dialogue for all participants and an equal opportunity to listen and reflect. This will require participants to feel inclusive in a safe and open environment where anyone present can share their thoughts regardless of their ethnicity, religion, ability, body size, appearance, age, sexual orientation, or gender. While we provide a platform to share ideas, we also hope participants will be intentionally inclusive and respectful of diverse perspectives.

All participants are expected to treat everyone present with respect. The conference is an important venue and safe space for all attendees, and we prohibit any intimidating, discriminatory, harassing, or threatening conduct. This policy applies to all attendees, speakers, conference moderators during sessions, workshops, panel discussions and other event-related activities. We all play a role in fostering a positive environment of trust, respect, open communication and ethical behavior.

Here are some strategies to enhance and ensure a safe space for everyone:

  • Support a shared, inclusive, positive and respectful environment for all participants
  • Be considerate of cultural beliefs, perspectives, lived experiences, racial histories in discussions
  • Maintain awareness and respect the diverse viewpoints, beliefs, and cultural norms that may unintentionally provide debate or disagreement

This policy applies to all dialogue that occurs virtually including social media postings, chat, and all other forms of electronic communication regarding the event.

Unacceptable Behavior

  • Any incitement of violence or any threats of violence or harm towards any individual.
  • Derogatory comments regarding an individual’s race, sexual orientation, physical appearance, religion, gender, sexual orientation
  • Posting threatening messages in online environments
  • Harassing photography or recording without consent
  • Unwelcome sexual attention, sexual comments, and sexual advances sexual advances

We value your attendance and want to make the conference experience as educational and productive as possible.
