In February of 2022, researchers determined that it to be the largest such wave ever recorded.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW52543927 BCX9\">Dr. Johannes <\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SpellingErrorV2Themed SCXW52543927 BCX9\">Gemmrich<\/span><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW52543927 BCX9\">, Research Scientist in the Department of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/science\/physics\/index.php\"><span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW52543927 BCX9\">Physics and Astronomy<\/span><\/a>, <span class=\"NormalTextRun SCXW52543927 BCX9\">and co-author Leah Cicon (a former graduate student of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/science\/seos\/index.php\">School of Earth and Ocean Sciences<\/a> at UVic), wrote about the wave in their 2022 publication <a href=\"https:\/\/doi.org\/10.1038\/s41598-022-05671-4\">Generation mechanism and prediction of an observed extreme rogue wave<\/a>. The paper was one of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/science\/physics\/about\/home\/news\/current\/johannes-gemmrichleah-cicon-paper-included-in-natures-top-100-research-papers-of-2022.php\"> Nature Journal&#8217;s Top 100 Most Downloaded Papers<\/a> in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Dr. Gemmrich, who was quoted in recent articles on the subject from both Science Alert and the Times of India, also has several of his papers posted in UVic&#8217;s institutional repository, <a href=\"https:\/\/dspace.library.uvic.ca\/browse?type=authoronly&amp;value=Crawford%2C+Curran\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">UVicSpace<\/a>.
