{"id":3192,"date":"2023-10-11T10:00:24","date_gmt":"2023-10-11T17:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/scholarlycommunications\/?p=3192"},"modified":"2024-04-11T14:19:47","modified_gmt":"2024-04-11T21:19:47","slug":"research-funders-dora","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/onlineacademiccommunity.uvic.ca\/scholarlycommunications\/2023\/10\/11\/research-funders-dora\/","title":{"rendered":"Canadian Research Funders\u2019 Commitment to the San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA)"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In 2019, the five major national research funding agencies in Canada <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cihr-irsc.gc.ca\/e\/51732.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">announced<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> that they had signed on to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sfdora.org\/read\/\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">San Francisco Declaration on Research Assessment (DORA)<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\">, an initiative which calls for more holistic practices for evaluating research outputs. These five organizations include the Tri-Agency Research Council members &#8211; the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council Canada (NSERC), and the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) &#8211; as well as the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) and Genome Canada.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">In August 2023, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cihr-irsc.gc.ca\/e\/51731.html\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">CIHR reaffirmed their commitment to fulfilling DORA<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"auto\"> recommendations by updating their program guidance to applicants and peer reviewers. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nserc-crsng.gc.ca\/NSERC-CRSNG\/policies-politiques\/DORA-DORA_eng.asp\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">NSERC<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sshrc-crsh.gc.ca\/funding-financement\/merit_review-evaluation_du_merite\/dora\/index-eng.aspx\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">SSHRC<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> both also have statements discussing how becoming DORA signatories aligns with their current practices. They also stipulate how their funding mandates will change in response to DORA principles.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559739&quot;:160,&quot;335559740&quot;:259}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">A few universities are included in the list of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sfdora.org\/signers\/?_organization_country=canada&amp;_per_page=50\"><span data-contrast=\"none\">50 Canadian signatories<\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> of DORA.
