The team narrowed their focus on Christmas Island (also known as Kiritimati) for in-depth observations on the recovery of bleached coral\u00a0<em>during\u00a0<\/em>a heat wave rather than after sea temperatures had cooled down.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>In a sea of grim news, researchers have found a glimmer of hope: Some corals have the capacity to recover from bleaching, even in the middle of a heat wave, reports Erik Stokstad for\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencemag.org\/news\/2020\/12\/surprising-sign-resilience-some-corals-can-survive-long-heat-waves\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Science<\/a><\/em>. The team published their findings this week in\u00a0<em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41467-020-19169-y\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Nature Communications<\/a><\/em>.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>This paper features co-authors, Danielle C. Claar, Samuel Starko, Kristina L. Tietjen, Hannah E. Epstein &amp; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.uvic.ca\/science\/biology\/people\/profiles\/baum-julia.php\">Julia K. Baum.<\/a> Collaborators include UVic Biology faculty members, postdoctoral researchers, and students.
