On May 24, the Aboriginal Peoples Television Network‘s Melina visited the University of Victoria’s West Coast Wave Initiative. There, Bryson Robertson showed how they take wave measurement buoys out to Sooke and deploy it.
As Robertson explained, these wave measurement buoys are extremely important in the process of finding out if there is potential for marine energy devices. They focus on understanding waves, tidal, and offshore wind energy, as well as how much power can be produced, and what the survivability of the devices are.
This research is paramount to finding sustainable ways to get energy into communities where the cost of energy is high enough to be driving people out. “My vision of the post-carbon world has a suite of renewable energy resources designed for the location where the demand is,” said Robertson, in the interview with Melina. “I think we need to tap into the resources that are local to an area and use those to supply the electricity or the energy that is required.”
Dr. Bryson Robertson is a senior research engineer at the West Cove Wave Initiative at the University of Victoria- an initiative dedicated to creating a comprehensive understanding of the wave energy resource off Vancouver Island.
