While not all the species identified during Schmidt Ocean Institute’s recent expedition will turn out to in fact be new to scientists, the diversity of marine life that was found is nevertheless important and exciting. UVic’s Dr. Verena Tunnicliffe explained to CBC News that understandings of marine biodiversity, which stem from expeditions such as these, will help us support the long-term health of the world’s oceans.
Dr. Tunnicliffe is Professor Emerita of the University of Victoria’s Department of Biology. In December 2021, Dr. Tunnicliffe was named an officer of the Order of Canada for her leadership and innovation in the field of deep-sea exploration. She held a Canada Research Chair in Deep Ocean Research, and was awarded UVic’s David H. Turpin Gold Medal for Career Achievement in Research (2016) as well as Raincoast Conservation Foundation’s Newman Award for Excellence in Conservation and Research (2014).
