Foreign Affairs Minister Mélanie Joly has issued a “wake-up call” to Canada’s allies, urging them to recognize the United States as an unreliable partner under President Donald Trump’s leadership. Joly’s recent European trip aimed to bolster cooperation on economic security and defense, highlighting the threats Canada faces from U.S. tariffs. Joly stressed the importance of pragmatic diplomacy and deeper integration among allied democracies to counterbalance U.S. actions.
Global security expert Will Greaves, an associate professor of international relations at the University of Victoria, emphasized the need for a transformative shift in how Canada and its allies view the U.S., and underlined the need for Canada and its allies to recognize the United States as a “rogue superpower” and an unreliable partner under President Donald Trump.
Will Greaves‘ research focuses on global politics and security, climate change and energy, Indigenous peoples, Canadian foreign policy, and the circumpolar Arctic. He also serves as the Undergraduate Director and Honours Adviser in the Political Science department. Greaves is actively involved in several federally-funded research networks, including the North American and Arctic Defence and Security Network (NAADSN), the Canadian Defence and Security Network (CDSN), and the Réseau d’analyse stratégique (RAS), where he leads initiatives on climate change and security.
Dr. Greaves has also published multiple articles about environmental changes and human security, some of which can be found on our online repository, UVicSpace!
