During the first weekend of March, Canada hosted Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. This visit was expected to be different from last year as in the last G7 conference, Justin Trudeau stated he was concerned about Meloni’s right-wing views, specifically surrounding 2SLGBTQ+ rights. Instead, Trudeau is projected to deepen the relationship between Italy and Canada.

Dr. Amy Verdun, director of UVic’s European Studies program explained that as Europe leans more to the right in their politics, it is in Canada’s best interest to create more politically diverse relationships.

Dr. Verdun is a professor in political science, as well as a founding director of the European Studies program at UVic. Dr. Verdun’s research interests include comparative politics, European integration studies, governance, international political economy, and international relations.
