In celebration of Open Education Week 2024
Please join UVic Libraries, ePublishing Services on Thursday, March 7, from 1:00pm-2:30pm PST, for our Open Educational Resources (OER) Showcase! This event, which is in celebration of Open Education Week 2024, is a panel discussion between UVic authors who have created open textbooks. After the panel discussion, there will be an opportunity for informal discussion over some light refreshments. This is a hybrid event, taking place in the Digital Scholarship Commons and over Zoom. All are welcome!
We are thrilled to have Dr. Rosalie Starzomski, Natalie Boldt, and Dr. Lijun Zhang joining us as panelists!
Dr. Rosalie Starzomski is Professor Emeritus at the School of Nursing. Her open textbook – co-written with Dr. Janet Storch and Dr. Patricia Rodney – is titled Toward a Moral Horizon: Nursing Ethics for Leadership and Practice, 3rd Edition. It is available for download via UVicSpace (the university’s institutional repository).
Natalie Boldt, a co-author of Why Write? A Guide for Students in Canada 2nd Edition will also be joining us as a panelist. Natalie is a PhD candidate in the Department of English and a member of the Centre for Academic Communication team.
Dr. Lijun Zhang is Associate Teaching Professor in the Department of Economics. Dr. Zhang adapted an OpenStax Textbook for the UVic undergraduate course ECON 104: Principles of Macroeconomics.
The panelists will address topics such as:
- why they chose to go open with their textbook,
- rewards and challenges of the process,
- technical aspects of the book’s production,
- feedback received during the process (e.g., from students and colleagues),
- what it was like collaborating with UVic Libraries,
- group dynamics and production workflows,
- advice they would give to authors contemplating creating open textbooks,
- and more!
The event will also be an opportunity to launch UVic Libraries’ OER by Discipline Directory, a curated collection of OER resources for the UVic community.
