On Friday December 15th , UVic’s Dr. Bernadette (Bernie) Pauly was showcased conversing with On the Island host Gregor Craigie about the BC Coroners Service’s recent public safety warning regarding an increase in deaths from unregulated drugs.

On Thursday, December 21st, Dr. Pauly published an article with the Victoria Times Colonist speaking to the destructive effects of punitive, systemic policies on people experiencing homelessness. On this, the longest night of the year and the National Memorial Day for Homeless Persons, Dr. Pauly calls on us to ask our elected officials to support non-punitive and evidence-based policies.

Dr. Pauly is both a Professor with the School of Nursing and a Scientist with the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research at the University of Victoria. Dr. Pauly’s research focuses primarily on substance use, harm reduction, and health equity.
