A post by a UK stepmother on the parent site Mumsnet has raised an interesting discussion about environmental psychology and a phenomenon called ‘territoriality’. After asking users of the social media site whether she was rude for asking her daughter-in-law to move from ‘her’ spot on the couch, the stepmother in question received many comments from users providing opinions on the matter.

Yahoo! News weighed in on the topic, in part by quoting UVic’s Dr. Robert Gifford, Professor of Psychology. Dr Gifford explains that ‘territoriality’ is most often employed to maintain peace rather than in the spirit of aggression.
