WEEKLY COFFEE SOCIALS

Winter Semester 2023

Join us on Thursdays from 2:30-3:30pm for coffee (or tea!) in the lounge! Bring your own mugs, and we’ll bring the brew! All graduate students are welcome to attend!

We will send out reminder emails every Thursday over PsycGrads.

Past events:

Halloween is BACK and the PGSC is hosting another spook-tacular shindig! The night will feature Halloween-specific trivia 😀

We encourage everyone have snacks, a potion or two, and costumes if you’d like to dress up! We’ll make time to chat and give everyone a chance to catch up or meet any new students they have not had a chance to meet yet.

Treat prizes are at stake for the most Halloween-informed teams!

Join the Ombuddy, Elysia, in a Q&A session with the University’s Ombudsperson!

The Ombuddy serves as a liaison between the Department and the University’s Ombudsperson. This will be a great opportunity to learn more about how they can serve you during your studies!

Check your email to RSVP, for Zoom details on how to join, or for links to more information about the Ombudsperson at UVic.

Summer is quickly coming to an end. Catch up with everyone at Willow’s Beach before the term starts back up! Don’t forget to bring your water, sunscreen, snacks, and games.

Check your email or the UVic Psychology Graduate Students Facebook page for more details.

Have you ever wanted to attend a prom over Zoom?

Have you ever wondered if you could do that, but in the ’80s?
Have you ever considered that it could lead to MURDER?!?!
You are invited to an end-of-year soirée: the Totally Rad 80s Prom Gone Bad VIRTUAL MURDER MYSTERY.
Date and time: Saturday, April 24th at 7:00pm PDT (on Zoom)
Plus ones (significant others, roommates, etc.) are invited too!
See the mystery intro attached in the PsycGrad email.

See PsycGrads email for Zoom invitations!

You do not need to be available for the full 2 hours to join either workspace, come for as much or as little as you can! Please be respectful of others’ work flow when joining or leaving partway through the work session.

Bre and Lauren are hosting our final social event of the semester this Thursday at 5:30pm PST. Join the zoom link emailed to you for Zoom Chat Roulette! Students will be randomly assigned to breakout rooms so that we all get a chance to chat with each other. Feel free to bring your own snack, beverage, and/or dinner!

You’re invited to a night of trivia hosted by your PGSC social events coordinators Bre and Lauren! Join us March 17th at 7pm for three exciting rounds of trivia, including traditional trivia but also picture and music questions!

As we continue in these challenging COVID19 times, increasingly, there is light at the end of the tunnel. However, the anniversary of the original lockdown will be a difficult marker for many of us. Let’s come together virtually to support each other and have some fun as we patiently await a time when we can all see each other in person again.

Plus ones are welcome! Please bring your significant others or roommates to join in the fun.

RSVP link in PsycGrads email!

The PGSC would like to gain a broader picture of graduate student experiences in the department this semester. Complete our survey (see PsycGrads email for the link) and let us know how you’re doing generally, if your research has been impacted by COVID-19, how your TA experiences have been this semester, and provide any feedback you’d like to share with us. We hope to use data from this survey to develop concrete suggestions that our student reps can bring to departmental and GEC meetings.

Our PGSC picnic has been rescheduled for Sunday, September 20th from 1-3pm.

It will be somewhat chilly on Sunday so make sure to dress for the weather.

Please check-out the take-out recommendations provided by your fellow students (and all the drama between Chrissy and Lauren over what is truly the BEST sushi place in Victoria)!

https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1-KjYrltGpdKRynJmSgVuHdhWmEW82guf6yf0CCxSKXQ/edit?usp=sharing

We will be meeting at the Beacon Hill Children’s Farm and picnicking near there. See you Sunday!

You are invited to our virtual trivia night – this year’s version of the grad buddy meet up! Every grad student in the department is invited (i.e., even if you are not a buddy) to participate in five rounds of fun and funny trivia! Everyone will be competing in teams of two, so grab a partner and join us! Incoming students will be paired with their student buddies, of course!

We are encouraging everyone to have snacks and a drink or two ready for the event (as you would at a pub trivia) and there will be refreshment breaks and time for chatting in between rounds. This also gives Lauren and Bre a chance to score between rounds – and the scoring will be important, because there are PRIZES to be won!

So join us on Thursday the 10th at 7pm PDT with your buddy/trivia partner on Zoom (email us for the link). We’re excited and we hope you are too!

To welcome our new psychology grad students, we have planned an in-person tour of the campus by your fellow grad students.

We are going to walk around campus and get students acquainted with all of the necessary resources and great spots for food, coffee and more before heading to the information session with the department.
Physical distancing will be upheld as much as possible, and we will be encouraging everyone to wear masks for the indoor portions and/or the portions where physical distancing won’t be possible.

Email us for more info!

Welcome new grad students!

Join us for a short hang out on September 3rd. This will be a chance for the new grad students to meet each other and learn some faces.

Lauren and Bre will be there to answer questions about upcoming orientation events and any other questions that come up.

We’re excited to meet you!
