We embrace a Pedagogy of Care as foundational in our approach to everyday practice with children and\u00a0families.\u00a0 We work in alignment with the BC Early Learning Framework to\u00a0create a\u00a0warm and\u00a0nurturing environment\u00a0to support all aspect of children\u2019s growth. Understanding pedagogy as\u00a0a\u00a0collective, life-making project that responds to the conditions of\u00a0our times<\/b> (Vintimilla, 2020), we\u00a0ask ourselves how thinking differently about children can open our eyes to new ways of being with\u00a0children in everyday moments?<\/em><\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0Pedagogical decisions at Cedar Place <\/b>are based on anti-colonial<\/b>, anti-racist<\/b> principles of inclusion that\u00a0recognize all<\/b> children as co-participants in shaping their world(s).\u00a0 Our educational<\/b> philosophy places great value on taking a gentle approach to care. We emphasize relationship building that honours children\u2019s connections with families, educators, the environment, and more-than-human-others.<\/p>\n

We make time for planned and spontaneous moments throughout the ebbs and flows of a Cedar Place day.\u00a0 As we nurture space for subtle moments of\u00a0experimentations<\/b>, we are committed to thinking and being alongside children with their\u00a0unique gifts and curiosities.\u00a0 We create curriculum-making processes that involve time outdoors (with its offering of bigger spaces, weather and meeting with\u00a0creatures and their families) and indoors (with the daily journey of meeting with children\u2019s families, toilet learning, eating, sleeping and being together in the world with our bodies). In both indoors and\u00a0outdoors we are committed to creating experiences that\u00a0 help connect us to the territory of\u00a0the\u00a0l<\/b>\u0259<\/b>k<\/b>\u0313\u02b7\u0259<\/b>\u014b<\/b>\u0259<\/b>n, Songhees<\/b>, Esquimalt<\/b> and\u00a0W<\/b>S\u00c1NE\u0106\u00a0<\/b>peoples. This includes engaging with gardening, stories\/story-telling and dancing while always recognizing children as members of a family, culture and community with their own ways of doing and being in the world.<\/p>\n

Integral to Cedar Place, we believe in reciproc<\/b>ity<\/b> within communication and the exchange of ideas and experience between families, children and educators.<\/b><\/p>\n

Hay’sxw’qa si’em!\u00a0\u00a0 <\/b>(hy-sh-kwa sea-em)!<\/b><\/p>\n

We say this in honour of now and future Songhees and Esquimalt peoples, for whom Hay\u2019sxw\u2019qa si\u2019em (hy-sh-kwa sea-em)! means, “Thank you, respected or honourable one.”<\/p>\n
