Call for proposals: “Out of Ireland and Into 2022 – Ulysses on the high seas again”
This year marks the 100th anniversary of the publication of Ulysses. Please join us in acknowledging and celebrating Joyce’s genius by reconsidering his achievement in multiple contexts, reaching out beyond the original coordinates of both its composition and location. Joyce’s original periplum has stood us in good stead, yet there might be new territories and new contours on the contemporary horizon. To reflect this reality, we welcome both creative and analytical contributions to our symposium, which seeks to address questions related to the novel’s deterritorialized presence and relevance in today’s aesthetic production and scholarly discourse. Possible approaches and considerations might include but are not limited to:
Ulysses …
…resisting the canon
…decolonized and/or recontextualized
…and exile or self-exile
…and the politics / ethics of translation
…global and across borders
…in popular culture
…in the new modernist studies
…and weak modernism
…and joy / reparative reading / humble(ing) Ulysses
…out of the mind and into the body
…and transgression
…as theory
…accessible
…ageing
…(post)pandemic
…and Dublin / “all the cities of the world”
…and its publishing history (obscenity/taboo/censorship)
…and dwelling in / accepting difficulty (politics and ethics of difficulty)
…encyclopaedic / mosaic / fragmented
…being defined / “Definitional proliferation” (re: Arthi Vadde)
Conference Format:
The symposium will be hosted in a face-to-face format taking place on (and around) June 16, 2022. Hosted by the University of Victoria, it will take place in downtown Victoria, including a social event at the entirely Joyce-themed Peacock Bistro. It will feature a block of sessions presenting creative contributions and a block of sessions bringing together research presentations. The event will be recorded and/or live-streamed. Further details about possible travel grants and registration are forthcoming.
How to submit:
Abstracts of 300 words for 15–20-minute presentations and a short bio (including contact information) should be submitted to outof1922@gmail.com by 30 May 2022. If you have any questions or concerns about submissions, please do not hesitate to contact us at the above email address. We look forward to receiving your proposals and meeting you in Victoria this Bloomsday.
CFP: “Out of Ireland and Into 2022 – Reimagining Ulysses”
We are soliciting creative works that respond to, reflect, extend, or are otherwise inspired by the chapters of Ulysses. While your contribution can take a wide variety of forms, there are some general guidelines we would like you to follow. Works should respond to a single chapter.
- All works should be recorded/captured so that they can be displayed in an online exhibition (high fidelity equipment is not required, and assistance may be available); live performances are welcome, as long as they can be recorded
- Essays/short fiction/creative writing should be approximately 2,000 – 3,000 words in total; single poems or poem clusters are also welcome
- Performances (music, theatre, dance, or otherwise) should be limited to approximately 15 minutes (shorter works are welcome, too)
- Art works do not need to be displayed publicly
NB – all submissions may be posted on our online exhibition, which is publicly viewable.
How to submit:
Please send your submissions to outof1922@gmail.com by 30 May 2022.
If you have any questions about submissions, please get in touch. Similarly, if you are interested in several different chapters, please get in touch, as some chapters may prove more popular than others and we want to ensure that each chapter is represented.
