What are Open Educational Resources?<\/h2>\n

The concept of\u00a0Open educational resources (OER) emerged during a 2002 UNESCO Forum on Open Courseware for Higher Education in Developing Countries. The initial concept was further developed as follows:<\/p>\n

Open Educational Resources are defined as \u2018technology-enabled, open provision of educational resources for consultation, use and adaptation by a community of users for non-commercial purposes.\u2019 They are typically made freely available over the Web or the Internet. Their principle use is by teachers and educational institutions to support course development, but they can also be used directly by students. Open Educational Resources include learning objects such as lecture material, references and readings, simulations, experiments and demonstrations, as well as syllabuses, curricula, and teachers\u2019 guides. (Wiley, 2006)<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

The course textbook was incredible. Not only was it free, but it was structured better than other textbooks. I did not feel the need to go online and find videos to help like in other classes. I believe this was largely thanks to the course textbook, which concisely
conveyed the necessary information making studying much more simple.<\/p>\n

    OERs include lesson plans, open textbooks, videos, images, tests, software, and any other tools, materials or teaching materials used to support ready access to knowledge.<\/p>\n

    They are digital, easily modified and freely distributed. OERs have an open license that allows others to reuse, revise, remix and redistribute the materials.<\/p>\n
