The UVic Open Hub<\/h2>\n

The UVic Open Hub is a portal for developing open education initiatives, resources, and community to increase the availability, access, reuse, and redistribution of knowledge artifacts and to support the participation of stakeholders, including undergraduate and graduate students, staff, faculty, and administrators, in areas spanning research (open access, open scholarship, open data), teaching and learning (open education, open pedagogy, open educational resources), and service (connecting open practices for community engagement, marketing, recruitment).<\/p>\n

UVic is fortunate to be the home for various open culture advocates, who would like to support advancing UVic as a leader in open initiatives. We are diverse and our respective specialties each touch directly on different areas of the UVic Strategic Plan. Despite this, open initiatives at UVic have been slow to take off, with grants being underutilized, and the projects that do exist lack the potential for discoverability and amplification both within and beyond UVic that an open hub would provide.<\/p>\n

Working with graduate students as open education champions, we will seek to surface, support, and advocate for open education practices across our campus. These initiatives will be celebrated and shared on the UVic Open Hub website. This approach has two advantages, in both building capacity for open education among graduate students, and achieving more airtime with faculty in sharing how they might engage more openly by situating open champions within each Faculty.<\/p>\n

Project outcome<\/h2>\n

This initiative will result in the development of the Open Hub Website, a community of practice for graduate champions and faculty interested in learning more, increasing scholarly outputs such as presentations, reports, and blog posts about the initiative, and fostering open educational practices in teaching and learning. The community will be facilitated through open source software tools.<\/p>\n

UVic is fortunate to be the home for various open culture advocates, who would like to support advancing UVic as a leader in open initiatives. We are diverse and our respective specialties each touch directly on different areas of the UVic Strategic Plan. Despite this, open initiatives at UVic have been slow to take off, with grants being underutilized, and the projects that do exist lack the potential for discoverability and amplification both within and beyond UVic that an open hub would provide.\r\n\r\nWorking with graduate students as open education champions, we will seek to surface, support, and advocate for open education practices across our campus. These initiatives will be celebrated and shared on the UVic Open Hub website. This approach has two advantages, in both building capacity for open education among graduate students, and achieving more airtime with faculty in sharing how they might engage more openly by situating open champions within each Faculty.\r\n\r\nThis initiative will result in the development of the Open Hub Website, a community of practice for graduate champions and faculty interested in learning more, increasing scholarly outputs such as presentations, reports, and blog posts about the initiative, and fostering open educational practices in teaching and learning.
