Research Themes

Theme 1: Cancer Nanomedicine

The first theme of the cluster is to pioneer new cancer nanomedicines, and translate these new therapeutics into the clinic where they can be of use to society. Tailored nanomedicines are able to overcome some of the many biological barriers that prevent existing therapeutics from reaching their target locations effectively. This can lead to new and improved therapies for a range of challenging cancers.

Theme 2: Combatting Antimicrobial Resistance

The second theme of the cluster is to develop new nanotherapeutics that are capable of combatting antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial resistance is a key challenge facing humanity, with the number of infections caused by resistant bacteria predicted to increase each year, leading to an estimated 10 million deaths per annum by 2050. Nanoparticles are able to overcome antibiotic resistance by either exhibiting more general mechanisms of action or by synergistically delivering combinations of antibiotics to target bacteria.
