About the Cluster

On the following pages you can read more about the cluster and it’s aims. These pages are a work in progress, so please check back soon!

The cluster was founded in July 2023 to bring together a diverse range of interdisciplinary researchers at the University of Victoria to harness their expertise, knowledge, and technologies to translate nanoparticle-based therapeutics from academic research labs into the clinic and commercial applications.

Cluster members are at the leading-edge of their respective fields internationally, and aim to develop new therapeutics to address key medical challenges of importance to Canadian society and also globally, such as cancer and antibiotic resistance. The nanotherapeutics cluster will leverage the unique benefits of novel nanomaterials prepared by cluster members as delivery vehicles to treat these and other important ailments. Cluster research on cancer therapeutics will focus on the delivery of nucleic acids and other drugs to a variety of target locations and tissues in collaboration with BC Cancer. The cluster will also explore the development of new nanoparticle-based approaches to treat challenging bacterial infections. Whilst cancer and bacterial infections will be the cluster’s initial targets, in the longer term, as the cluster expands to include further expertise, we aim to target potential treatments for other disease areas too.
