CURRENT PROJECTS

Overview

Building on my dissertation work, my program of research focuses on the mental health of immigrants and refugees and includes arts based methods, peer and public engagement and intersectionality theory. It is my belief that research which seeks to understand these complex intersections will promote excellence in mental health policy and practice. These approaches give voice to non-dominant narratives, which address inequities in health.

Community Health

Nancy has a strong passion for addressing health inequities in communities. Her inclusionary attuned vocabulary was highly influential in moving with the shifting views of society as we bring this forth to practice. Nancy’s belief in students getting what they take from the course allowed for my classes’ engagement to be my own decision. Having this respect for us as learners contributed to my receptivity to the material being taught. Class discussions of each group’s chosen communities provided breadth in community health as well as depth by focusing on only one community with my group throughout the semester.

This course was the only one that didn’t stress me out. This is the right way to introduce group work to cohort of students who haven’t done group work in over a year. Expectations were very clear and assignments were manageable yet very effective in consolidating my learning and broadening my interest in community health. As someone with learning difficulties, it’s hard to maintain interest in a course but it was so easy with N350, 10/10.

I think the biggest strength exhibited by Nancy is that she really cared. She is knowledgeable and cares about the material, and genuinely cares about how the students are able to absorb the information. Nancy brought her lived experiences and added authenticity to the lessons. I really appreciated all of her feedback and the time that she took to guide our weekly discussions a step further. She was supportive and available for help and her offering guidance in developing our papers was a kind thing to do.

Testimonials

Research

Nancy was a fantastic instructor in a very difficult course. This course should NOT have been asynchronous. When questions arose, Nancy was quick to reply on discussion boards. She provided additional material to engage with course concepts (like video powerpoints) and provided helpful feedback in a timely manner. Each successive assignment I saw my grade rise due to her feedback. Nancy had reasonable expectations and was very understanding when I did not understand concepts as she took the time to explain them. When she made the blunder of answering questions regarding a different article, she took ownership and provided us extra time to complete the learning acitivity with the correct advice. Thank you for all your hard work this semester.

Nancy was literally my favourite prof this semester, a true queen. She was available for all questions and responded very quickly to emails. She was also very non–judgemental. She made course content digestible, which was honestly such a feat. She was reassuring that this course was not about getting it 100% right and knowing everything there is to know about research but rather it was more about trying and learning (which was so awesome and how all courses should be). She was a very fair marker and made class really enjoyable. I hear that other sections did not have as great of a time so I am very grateful to have had nancy as my instructor.
