Introductions

Meet the crew!

Hazel

Hello! My name is Hazel Woodbridge, I am an Anthropology major focusing on mortuary archaeology at the University of Victoria. I experience chronic pain in my lower body that often extends to the upper limbs, as well as an old unhealed severe sprain in my right wrist. I am a crafter and am very excited to learn Naalbinding. I think looking into how disability may have affected people working in hands-on crafts and textiles is going to be very interesting.

Sam

Hello there! My name is Sam Battley, and I am majoring in Anthropology with a minor in Psychology at the University of Victoria. I have a generalized fine motor disability and experience joint pain, weakness, and loss of mobility in my hands when I am experiencing a flare-up. I look forward to learning naalbinding and gaining insight into the ways that disabilities may have influenced the ways in which it was done.

Jordy

Hi! My name is Jordy Bater (she/they), and I’m in my fifth year at UVic double majoring in English and Anthropology. To provide context for this project, I have fibromyalgia, which is mainly characterized by chronic, widespread muscle pain and heightened pain sensitivity, as well as other miscellaneous symptoms. For me, this pain is mainly concentrated in my back, but also commonly occurs in my arms, legs, and feet.

Juliette

Hello! My name is Juliette Patton. I am a fourth year student majoring in Anthropology with a minor in Biology at the University of Victoria. I will be participating in the experiential research activity involving medieval naalbinding. Although medieval work is not my specialty, I enjoy crocheting in my free time and am excited to learn new ways of textile making. Depending on how this goes, I hope to make naalbinding an additional hobby of mine!
