The following is a guest blog post from Admissions and Faculty Assistant Tanis Harrison. Thanks for your contribution, Tanis!

You’ve worked hard on your undergraduate degree, submitted a stellar application, and have been accepted to UVic Law – so now what?

Presumably you’ve already given yourself a well-deserved pat on the back – getting into law school is no small feat! While your next steps will vary based on your current situation (i.e., if you’ll be moving across campus or moving across the country), we’ve compiled a list of resources to help you plan for your upcoming transition to UVic Law:

  • Victoria’s housing market is tight, but there are decent options out there. There is a limited amount of on-campus housing, which is allocated by lottery (application deadline is May 15), but the majority of our students live off campus. UVic Residence Services maintains a list of off-campus and roommate resources, which is a great place to start your search.
  • If you need more information on financial aid options, review our Tuition and Financial Aid webpage, which includes a helpful video overview of the financial aid available to UVic Law students.

Once you’ve taken care of the basics (i.e., money and accommodation) you might want to take a deeper dive into some of the resources that will be available to you:

  • The Law Students’ Society (LSS) is the representative body of law students at UVic Law. Among other tasks, they plan your social orientation, which will take place over the first two weeks of school. As an incoming law student, you’ll receive regular updates from the LSS through our listserv.
  • The Amicus Program is a unique UVic Law student support initiative that plays an active role in engaging, advising and supporting you during your law school journey. There are four overlapping components in the program: academic support, student support, counselling support and academic concessions and accommodation support.
  • The Law Student Academic Services team is responsible for the day-to-day administration of matters related to the delivery of the JD and JD/JID programs. They can connect you with the resources and services you need to succeed in your academic program.
  • UVic Orientation includes programs, resources, and activities available to all incoming UVic students. If you’re new to UVic, this is a great entry point for all newcomers.
  • Student Wellness offers a variety of services to support students’ mental, physical and spiritual health. You can make a same-day or pre-booked appointment with a counsellor, nurse, physician, or spiritual care provider.

While this list is by no means comprehensive, we hope it gives you a place to start preparing for UVic Law. We look forward to seeing you in September!
