This is a guest post from Mahlet Bereket on behalf of the UVic BLSA chapter. Thanks, Mahlet!

Dear Incoming Law Students,

My name is Mahlet Bereket, and I am the President of the Black Law Students’ Association (BLSA) at UVic. We are so excited to welcome you into this next chapter of your academic and professional journey.

Starting law school is a big transition, and it can feel both exciting and overwhelming. BLSA exists to support Black law students throughout their time at UVic, be it socially, academically, or professionally. Whether you’re looking for mentorship, opportunities to connect with other Black students, professional development events, or just a space where you feel seen and understood, we’re here for you.

Throughout the year, we organize events that build community, create space for dialogue, and connect students with Black legal professionals across Canada. We also work closely with the wider BLSA Canada network and collaborate with other chapters to amplify our collective voices and experiences.

If you’d like to connect with us before the school year starts to ask any questions you might have about law school, moving to Victoria, or what to expect during orientation. You can reach us anytime at blsa@uvic.ca, or feel free to contact me directly at mahletb@uvic.ca.

We’re glad to have you joining our community, and we look forward to meeting you soon!

Best,

Mahlet
