A Few Basics

UVic Law is known for being a supportive environment. We have Amicus, a part-time option, and strong student support programs. However, there are limits to what we can support, based on how our faculty is set up. Here are a few that we get questions about regularly.

UVic Law is an in-person program. You cannot plan to attend remotely.

UVic Law is a full-time program. You cannot plan to work during the week and study at night or only weekends only. While there is a modified course load option, it is allowed by approval only. Classes are generally held during weekdays during the day.

You need to plan to attend the first day of class every term. Particularly during the first term of 1L, so much important information is given. This time isn’t replaceable.

You need to plan to fund your education, particularly the first year. While we have robust scholarship, bursary, and emergency and extraordinary needs funding programs, we do not have the budget to financially support our students entirely.

You need to have a plan to care for your physical and mental health, as well as for your academic success. Support is something that we take seriously. However, the support we provide is meant to assist you alongside your other support mechanisms. Our supports are not meant to replace your support system or serve as a surrogate for your responsibility for your well-being. We take very seriously that you need to take responsibility for your education and for your success in this program. This is a professional degree program that you need to be prepared for.
