The following is a guest blog post from Law Co-op Coordinator Francine Proctor (she/her). Thanks for your contribution, Francine!

A big congratulations to Garikai Chaora on his upcoming graduation with a Juris Doctor with the co-op designation.  It is a very meaningful part of my job as Law Co-op Coordinator to support law students like Garikai in exploring their career options by participating in the Law Co-op Program.

Garikai completed work terms in BC with the Ministry of Finance; the Ministry of Attorney General, Legal Services Branch;  and, the Office of the Human Rights Commissioner.

Law school is an exciting yet demanding time for most students. Alongside completing a rigorous academic curriculum, it is the first time many students have considered a job as a career.  Experiential learning programs, like Law Co-op, empower students to think more deeply about themselves and their individual goals for their life and career. Students can create their own pathway into their legal career, along with the confidence of knowing they are capable and belong in the profession.

In Garikai’s words:

“Participating in the Co-op program at the University of Victoria’s Faculty of Law has given me the opportunity to apply the legal skills I have learned in the classroom in a real-        life work environment.  Consequently, my co-op placements have helped me become more confident in my ability to work effectively in a legal setting. This experience has not    only enhanced my professional skills but also contributed significantly to my personal growth and development. Furthermore, the co-op program has allowed me to build  connections with lawyers and other professionals within the legal community. I am able to rely on these relationships for advice, career guidance, and mentorship.”

Congratulations Garikai!  We wish you all the best in your legal career.

We look forward to welcoming the new cohort of JD and JD/JID students to UVic Law this fall.  The Law Co-op Office also manages the Law Work Experience Program for students for JD/JID students.  Admission to both Law Co-op and Law Work Experience will take place during the Fall 2025 term.
