We are pleased to be heading into a second admission cycle with the new Black Admission Stream at UVic Law. Whether admitted through the Black Admission Stream or through another admission stream, we wanted to ensure our Black students are aware of resources available to them. We got in touch with BLSA President and Scarborough Charter Steering Committee member Hediyeh Karimian, who let us know the following:
In 2021, the University signed the Scarborough Charter https://www.utsc.utoronto.ca/principal/sites/utsc.utoronto.ca.principal/files/docs/Scarborough_Charter_EN_Nov2022.pdf, which was signed by 50 other institutions across the country as a commitment to redressing anti-Black racism and fostering Black inclusion on post-secondary institutions. Since then, UVic created a steering committee. They actually just launched their website a couple of months ago, where they are creating a one stop hub for Black students’ events, resources, supports, as well as their contact. If a Black student needs something or has a question, they can email them and the administrator forwards it to the appropriate steering committee member. See here the direct link to the site, https://www.uvic.ca/equity/education/black-inclusion/index.php#connection
The Scarborough charter committee resources page is up and live now, which has community resources for Black students. Here is the link: https://www.uvic.ca/equity/education/black-inclusion/resources/index.php
