Lois’ time at the Centre on Aging, later the Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health, honed her management skills while still allowing time to do a little research and conduct a great deal of knowledge mobilization (KM). Now, at the Global Laboratory for Digital Health Innovation, she is able to use all of her skills in research, management and KM while taking courses and learning new ways to approach research questions that make differences in people’s lives from a health information science perspective.

After training as an economist, Lois worked supporting projects that, at the time, were considered welfare economic research. This included military cost benefit analysis, women’s pay equity, infant mortality, labour economics, as well as access to healthcare and health predictors and outcomes. Her interest in access to health care is what drew her to all aspects of health economics and its impact on personal health outcomes. Lois refers to her work from 1984 to 1995 as that of an itinerate academic where she moved from university to university and research project to research project spanning a large part of Canada and both coasts in the United States. In 1996 she settled in Victoria and took on the role of an administrator at the Centre on Aging at UVic. In 2019 she stopped working until joining the Global Laboratory for Digital Health Innovation in January of 2022.
