Human Factors and Technology Safety in Healthcare: Risk Management in the Age of AI
Workshop held on March 8 & 15, 2024
Ensuring the usability and safety of healthcare systems is recognized as being critical for improving healthcare when new technologies are introduced. This has become even more salient with the advent of a range of new technologies including the increased application of artificial intelligence (AI) in domains such as healthcare. In this two-part workshop we will first define human factors, usability and user experience (UX) in the context of health technology. We will then demonstrate a range of practical methods that have been applied worldwide for ensuring the usability of health technology. In the second part of the workshop, we will follow up with discussion of the implications of the approaches and strategies discussed in Part 1 in the context of emerging technologies such as AI. This will include a discussion of methodological approaches and strategies to ensure both the usability and safety of these emerging technologies, when applied in actual real world healthcare practice, settings and contexts.
MARCH 8 Learning Outcomes
- Define human factors, usability and user experience (UX).
- Demonstrate methods for evaluating system usability (usability inspection).
- Demonstrate. methods for evaluating system usability (usability testing).
- Discuss the importance of iterative approaches to improving usability.
- Develop a cohesive strategy to ensure usability from vendor through to healthcare organization.
MARCH 15 LEARNING OUTCOMES
- Discuss the relationship between human factors and AI in healthcare.
- Define health technology safety.
- Review examples of safety issues in AI in healthcare.
- Review current considerations surrounding AI safety in healthcare.
- Present methods for evaluation and testing of system safety as part of a risk management strategy.
