The Report Phishing Button: It’s ‘Fin’tastic

Phishing is a form of fraud in which the attacker tries to learn information such as login credentials or account information by disguising as a reputable entity or person. Targeted attacks typically start with a phishing email sent to as many people as possible, that contains a link to a malicious website.

The University Of Victoria currently employs multiple methods that help to reduce phishing spam. Now thanks to DSS, you too can help to reel in the impact of phishing on campus. It codn’t be easier!

This week, Desktop Support Services (DSS) has been installing a Report Phishing feature into Outlook on all DSS supported Windows computers. The Report Phishing button will install automatically on your computer, and will appear as a new button on the ribbon menu in Outlook.

How does it work?

No need to flounder, simply select the suspected phishing message in your inbox and then click the Report Phishing button to report the phishing message to University Systems. The message will be deleted from your inbox, and sent to University Systems for further analysis. From there, staff will analyse the message and take appropriate actions. Reporting phishing messages will help to protect the University of Victoria from phishing attacks.

Now there is no need to leave phishing reporting to salmon else. The next time you suspect an email to be phishing, don’t take the bait, but rather the opportunaty to use the Report Phishing button to report it.
