University Systems News for April 2017

Accomplishments

The CourseSpaces learning management system was upgraded to Moodle 3.1.5 (PC0715). This new release includes a number of security patches and functionality upgrades, such as improved gradebook, quiz and forum functionality for end users.  It also ensures that our CourseSpaces system is technically current and fully supported by the Moodle developer community.

The UVic online admissions system was upgraded to enable graduate students to return after period of withdrawal, transfer into a different graduate program, or return to graduate non-degree studies. This new upgrade ensures a consistent student experience from initial application for admission through to graduation, and also provides administrators with improved information that is required to make timely re-admission and program change decisions.

A new de-provisioning tool was deployed for Apex applications. Previously there was no easy way to determine who has access to which Apex app, nor to centrally de-provision access when a user leaves their position at the University.  The Apex de-provisioner consolidates all the users, their roles and applications the user has access to in to one location, and allows the Production and Technical Support Team (PTS) to de-provision users from within the de-provisioner if authorization has been provided to do so.

The SailPoint identity and access management system was upgraded to IIQ 5.3.0. This new release includes a number of security patches and functionality upgrades, including improved UNIX account provisioning and Active Directory group management.

Around Campus

A key step in the PC0706-Decommission the WSS 3.0 SharePoint Service is to restrict off-campus access to the legacy SharePoint Service at share.uvic.ca. This was implemented last week by restricting the service to VPN only.

The PC0722-PaperCut ONECard Integration project was approved in April. This project will transition PaperCut over to use ONECard flex funds instead of maintaining separate PaperCut printing balances. Since approval, the team has held a kickoff meeting and obtained a quote for the license, and ordered the new module.

Client Technologies celebrated their classroom upgrade accomplishments over the last year at their April monthly meeting. In total, CLTE was involved with technologies upgrades to 52 rooms on campus in the past twelve months! Great work!

BCNET Community

From April 25-27, many University Systems staff attended the BCNET conference to share and collaborate with other higher education institutions in BC. Our staff were in 16 presentations to share our experiences and knowledge with the rest of the community!

April saw the start of a new collaboration with the Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) – we are now hosting their servers in our enterprise data centre. While public libraries may not be part of the higher-ed community, they have a sympathetic mission and are part of the BCNET family.
