New Year…New Voicemail!
As we head into 2014, we are excited to announce our latest example of improved campus technology. Better Voicemail moves us another step forward into a future where technology enables and empowers us to work on our own terms.
What is Better Voicemail?
Better Voicemail is a major step forward that provides new features beyond those delivered by our current voicemail system. Better Voicemail will provide users with additional functionality resulting in a more seamless integrating of voicemail with your Exchange email account.
With Better Voicemail, you can:
- Receive voicemails right in your UVic email inbox where they can be played directly
- Treat voicemails as emails by applying specific Outlook rules and filters
- Access voicemails via an improved touchtone interface that provides you with easy access to UVic email where you can listen to, forward or reply to all messages.
- Receive missed call notifications in your UVic inbox
- Enable text message notifications if on a Telus or Bell network
Out of office messages and calendaring are simplified by giving you the ability to access your calendar status and accept or cancel meeting request from your phone, a feature not available on the current system. Voice recognition commands are available when accessing voicemail with the option to stick with the original touchtone interface if desired. Better Voicemail also attempts to transcribe voicemail messages and the system will try to make them comprehensible – or at least comical. This feature is also optional and can be turned off.
Why do we have to switch?
Our current voicemail system is end of life and no longer supported by the vendor, so we want to start the New Year fresh with an enhanced, up-to-date, and more user friendly system like Better Voicemail. Not only does Better Voicemail come with new and improved features (as noted above), this change will also reduce licensing costs for the University.

The features provided offer support for our busy and often hectic lifestyles, and with Better Voicemail you get additional functionality in comparison to the current system. The theme of the future is about making our everyday demands in life easier to maintain and Better Voicemail fits this goal.

Sign up will be on a voluntary basis until February 12th, 2014 after which all users will be upgraded. Assistance will be provided during this migration in addition to our website that will answer all of your How-To’s and FAQs. The process is quick and painless, all you need to do is visit the University Systems website, select the ‘Switch me now’ button and fill out a form with your information.
