How will they guide the students in exploring and critically evaluating diverse resources, including non-academic sources?&#8221; content_max_width=&#8221;750px&#8221; _builder_version=&#8221;4.27.4&#8243; _module_preset=&#8221;default&#8221; header_font_size=&#8221;24px&#8221; body_ul_font_size=&#8221;18px&#8221; width=&#8221;131.3%&#8221; custom_margin=&#8221;-30px|0px||0px|false|false&#8221; custom_padding=&#8221;|0px|||false|false&#8221; hover_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243; global_colors_info=&#8221;{}&#8221; sticky_enabled=&#8221;0&#8243;]<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Understanding the different information literacy sources and conventional academic sources such as peer reviewed journals, books, book chapters, non-academic sources such as oral histories, social media, blogs, etc.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Introduction to Evaluation Frameworks: Introduce students to established frameworks such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hapgood.us\/2019\/06\/19\/sift-the-four-moves\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">SIFT (Stop, Investigate the source, Find better coverage, Trace claims, quotes, and media to the original context) <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">for assessing the credibility of information.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Teach students how to look at authority and authorship. What are the author\u2019s credentials or lived experience? Is the author affiliated with an institution? Are they an expert in the field?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Ask students to check if the resources are peer-reviewed or not. In the case of non-academic sources, who has published the information? Are the publishers a recognized knowledge body and if not, are they an independent publisher, Knowledge Keeper or organization?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Explain to students the peer review process, but that not all sources are evaluated by experts before publication and non-academic sources like , making them generally more trustworthy.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Engaging students to decipher representation in resources, whose voices exist and which voices are absent from the resources\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Incorporate Indigenous teachings and knowledge written by Indigenous peoples. Ask students to use, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/search.library.uvic.ca\/permalink\/01VIC_INST\/12198k2\/alma9941478083807291\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The Elements of Indigenous Style: A Guide for Writing By and About Indigenous Peoples<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> by Gregory Younging<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Remind users that if something is published, it is not necessarily true. Hence it is up to the user to create a robust search strategy to find information and then use various tools to determine whether the source is diverse or not. Some resources to support critical research methods include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.uvic.ca\/critical-citation\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Citation justice<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> guide that can give students a detailed account of the current state of publications, and help scaffold diverse practices for inclusive citations. Additionally, use the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.uvic.ca\/diversity\/home\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Diversify your sources<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> guide to find diverse research articles and the\u00a0 library guide to spot <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/libguides.uvic.ca\/fakenews\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Fake News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Lesser known voices are harder to find, however many publishers have created lists of diverse resources.
