Collaborating authors include Robillard Christina and Shen Alice. The article was published in International and Life Course Aspects of COVID-19.
Abstract:
In addition to major socioeconomic disruptions, the COVID-19 pandemic caused significant disruptions to adolescents’ social, personal, and academic lives worldwide. Social isolation and physical inactivity resulting from public health measures to reduce the spread of the virus raised concerns about a rise in suicidal thoughts and behaviors (STBs) among adolescents. This chapter reviews what is currently known about the impact of the pandemic on adolescent STBs through the lens of theoretical frameworks of suicide. Patterns in the motivational drivers and prevalence of suicidal ideation, suicide attempts, and suicide death during the pandemic compared to prepandemic periods are summarized. Further, suggestions for future research and policy are discussed to provide the infrastructure needed to understand and respond to mental health impacts of global disruptive events such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
