Research from Dissertation to World-Wide Implementation

May 31, 2022   10:00 – 11:30 am (PDT) online via Zoom

The Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health at UVic is pleased to be hosting Dr. Kate Lorig, a partner and former director of the Stanford Patient Education Research Centre and Professor Emerita at Stanford University’s School of Medicine, Division of Immunology and Rheumatology.  Dr. Lorig is a pioneer in the field of chronic disease self-management. Using a public health approach, she has developed and evaluated community-based education programs for individuals with a wide range of chronic conditions, including arthritis, diabetes, lung disease, cancer, and pain. Her self-management program has been adopted by organizations and communities in Canada, the US, Great Britain, Australia, China, Europe and South Africa. Dr. Lorig holds a Masters in Nursing and a Doctorate of Public Health in health education.

This presentation will follow the 40-year trajectory from forming a dissertation hypothesis to pivots during the pandemic and being a partner in a company serving 30 countries. While the case study will be evidence-based self-management intervention, the wrong turns and lessons learned will be common in many academic careers.

This session is only open to UVic faculty, students and post-docs. There will be a 45 minute presentation followed by a 45 minute Q & A session. Participants are encouraged to submit questions by May 27 to Jo Ann Miller at ialhresearch@uvic.ca. These will be collated and given to Dr. Lorig prior to the presentation.
