Network Café: Insights from the Field: Non-Academic Career Options

Bi-monthly Network Café sessions are intended to assist post-doctoral fellows and early career researchers to develop a career in academia, industry, or a combination of the two. The March session features presenters who have chosen to work primarily in non-academic settings. The panelists include:

  • Jason Globerman, a Senior Policy and Program Advisor in the Office of the Chief Medical Officer of Health at the Ontario Ministry of Health. Jason will speak to the value of working in government and the role of health systems decision makers.
  • Shahnaz Winer, a Research Associate at the Institute on Aging and Lifelong Health at UVic and the inaugural Chair of the Canadian Psychological Association’s Psychology Careers and Professionals Section. Shahnaz with speak to her experience working in both academic and non-academic fields as a PhD graduate, as well as her role with the Canadian Psychological Association.
  • Tim Lukyn, Director of Cogni Care, a company that specializes in providing rehabilitation and support services to individuals experiencing cognitive change due to acquired brain injuries. Tim will speak to his experience starting and running a business, obtaining a PhD while doing so, and trying to lead grant funded research and development projects in a non-academic setting.
