Half a world away in Victoria, I find comfort in a humble dish that always makes me nostalgic for home: poha. These flattened rice flakes, mixed with robust Indian spices, diced onions, a dash of lime, and a sprinkle of coriander, bring back memories of lazy mornings in my hometown, Indore. The best part? The crispy noodles, or ‘sev,’ sprinkled on top, adding a perfect crunch to every bite.

Back home, poha is a staple breakfast, fueling the start of the day for so many people. As an international student, I like to treat myself to poha on weekends or holidays, and it always takes me back down memory lane.

Even though I’m far from home, it’s reassuring to know that the ingredients for making poha are mostly available in Victoria, thanks to the international section at Walmart or any nearby Indian store. With just a quick 5-10 minutes of cooking, I can recreate the flavors of home with ease.

It’s comforting to know that no matter how far I go, a taste of home is never too far away
