Victoria Shipyards

The Foundation Company

The Foundation Company’s West Coast shipyard was located on the western shore of dailycolonist59by329uvic_0006FoundationCp7EXCERPTSEPIAVictoria’s upper harbour. Known as Point Hope, the site had been a shipyard since 1873, once known as Colling and Cook’s Ways and later Clark and Turpel’s Shipyard. 36 It was leased to the Foundation Company in 1917 and in that same year, the company produced five wooden cargo ships for World War I; the War Songhee, War Massett, War Babine, War Camchin, and the War Nanoose. 37 The newspaper article pictured here from the Daily Colonist, December 28, 1917 tells of the launch of the first ship, the War Songhee.
