Position Description:

The Generative AI for Research Graduate Assistant (GA) will report to the Digital Scholarship Commons Manager and will work with a team of staff, librarians, developers, and graduate assistants to provide support for student learning and digital exploration.

Candidate Profile:

The successful candidate will provide technical support for undergraduate and graduate students from all disciplines, focusing on tools and applications related to Generative AI for research and academic purposes. Tasks include, but are not limited to: 

  • Offering one-on-one support for researchers and students who are working with research-specific AI and GenAI-powered tools, including, but not limited to:
    • Undermine.ai
    • Elicit
    • Whisper.ai
    • NotebookLM
  • Offering one-on-one support for researchers and students who are working with general-purpose Generative AI applications, including but not limited to:
    • ChatGPT
    • Copilot
    • Gemini
    • Claude
    • GPT4All or LM Studio. This will include assisting with Python scripts to interact with cloud-based and locally running Large Language Model (LLM) APIs.
  • Primarily delivering GenAI workshops.
  • If time allows, updating and creating new workshop activities for new tools, techniques, and concepts.
  • Promoting Generative AI research consultation services to the graduate student society as well as potentially interested faculties and departments.

The ideal candidate for this position will: 

  • Be currently enrolled in a Master’s or Doctoral Program at the University of Victoria.
  • Have successfully completed a research ethics application, and UVic’s Office of Research Services has approved the application.
  • Have conducted research using at least some quantitative and qualitative research methods or a mixed methods research project.
  • Be interested in helping non-technical graduate students, faculty and researchers develop their skills to effectively use GenAI tools to assist them in their research projects.
  • Have some previous experience tutoring, training, or teaching.
  • Be able to work both collaboratively and independently.
  • Have strong written and verbal communication skills in English.

Duration: 

The position is available for up to 8/hrs per week, starting in September 2026 and ending in December 2026 with the possibility for renewal until the end of March 2027. Hours can be flexible to accommodate your class schedule.

Salary: $34.72 + 4% vacation pay

The UVic Libraries’ Digital Scholarship Commons (DSC) is a new facility that provides students with enhanced access to software, hardware, and expertise to support digital scholarship. The DSC serves students from all disciplines, with a special focus on graduate students, and will act as a hub for students to come together to share knowledge and to collaborate. The DSC employs specialists from different disciplines to support data analysis and visualization, mapping, media editing, virtual reality, and other areas of high demand.
