About the Study

Purpose and Goals

Ever wondered how COVID-19 affects the brain and behaviour?

COVID-19 has gained increased prevalence in the lives of many Canadians leading to a growing need to better understand how COVID-19 impacts the brain and thinking abilities.

Dr. Paterson, Dr. Gicas and our team of researchers from University of Victoria and the University of the Fraser Valley are investigating the cognitive and psychosocial impacts of COVID-19 in Canadians residing in British Columbia and Ontario.

 We aim to:

    1. Better understand how COVID-19 impacts neuropsychological functioning (i.e. memory, attention, language, decision-making) in Canadian adults by comparing those who have recovered from COVID-19 with those who have not had COVID-19.
    2. Identify risk and protective factors underlying severity of cognitive impairment by studying a diverse sample of Canadian adults.
    3. Inform healthcare professionals and public health stakeholders to aid in responding to the specialized clinical needs of COVID-19 patients and the development of rehabilitation strategies.

Eligibility

Eligible participants must:

  • Reside in British Columbia or Ontario.
  • Be at least 19 years old.
  • Either: (1) was confirmed positive for COVID-19 and was symptomatic at least 12 weeks prior OR (2) have had no known COVID-19 exposure or symptoms.

We aim to represent diverse and vulnerable groups in our study to better understand how diversity factors may be associated with neurocognitive and psychosocial outcomes.

This study has been approved by University of Victoria (REB#21-0362) and the University of the Fraser Valley’s (REB#2021-368) respective Research Ethics Boards.
