Our Philosophy

The Cortex Lab is a safe space, fostering academic conversation and co-learning experiences, while building relationships among its members and our community at UVic, and beyond. Our networking efforts for the formation of our collaborative team did not involve requirements of any specific sex, gender, sexual orientation, religion, race, or ethnicity. We welcomed diverse participants to the team, and we strive to achieve as generalizable and diverse of a group as is possible. Indeed, our team is diverse in experiences and backgrounds relating to our topics of interest, and we have international students and scholars completing fellowships with us from several countries. Furthermore, our Director, Dr. Garcia-Barrera is person of colour, Hispanic immigrant to Canada, first generation university student, and a member of the LGBTQ community, and as such, a firm believer on welcoming representatives of many diverse groups to our team; our Cortex Lab team is indeed rich in its diversity and it is one of our core values.
