Research Assistants

Simon Kurkimaki

I am in my final year to complete a BSc in psychology with plans to pursue a MSc in neuroscience. I am fascinated by the ongoing advances in neuropharmacology research and have a particular passion for learning about psychoactive compounds and how they relate to our understanding and formation of adaptive models of reality. Neuroplasticity, mechanisms of action, neural networks, and theoretical designs are all areas you’ll find me eager to study more. Being a part of the CORTEX lab has been crucial to my continued growth in academia.

Phillip Havin

I am working on my BSc in Psychology with a background in software and game design. At the CORTEX lab, I have learned a lot about data collection and ethical treatment of data. As a Research Assistant on the DECISION–MAP project, I am on software development team and contribute to the development of the DECISION–MAP interface and user platform. In the future, I hope to contribute to the field of psychology in the form of practical applications for clinicians and patients.

Devon Rees

I am a fifth year undergraduate psychology student at UVic. I am currently doing my honuors
thesis in psychoeducation of the prevention of cognitive decline. I am hoping to pursue a career
as a child clinical psychologist. My interests include child psychology, health psychology, and
overall how the brain and physical activity relate to mental health. In the CORTEX Lab, I work on DECISION–MAP as part of the reviewer team, supporting the systematic literature synthesis and data extraction aspects of the project. The CORTEX lab has allowed me new opportunities and has increased my curiosity about the human brain.

Nicholas Gavas

I am a fourth year psychology undergraduate at the University of Victoria with an interest in social cognition and the burgeoning field of psychedelic therapy. I am immensely passionate about research that raises the baseline for human flourishing, and prescribe to the model in which empirical sciences may inform spiritual practices, and vice versa. I feel very fortunate to have been working with the CORTEX Lab since February 2023 as part of the DECISION–MAP team, supporting screening and data extraction. I am very excited to see the positive impact that our work on the DECISION-MAP project will have on those suffering from acquired brain injury.

Yichun Zhao

I am a PhD candidate in Computer Science at UVic exploring in the area of Human-computer Interaction (HCI) in the VIXI Lab. HCI, with its interdisciplinary nature, continually piques my curiosity, inspiring me to explore its application across various domains. It has been a pleasure to collaborate with the CORTEX Lab working on the DECISION-MAP project and contributing my expertise in interface and study design with HCI methodologies. I deeply value contributions made by all team members, and I look forward to furthering our shared goals and witnessing the continued success of our projects.

Bernard

I have a BA in psychology and have had the honour of being a member of the CORTEX lab since 2020. I have a keen interest in psychometrics as well as in the intersections of executive function, brain injury, and the criminal justice system. During my time with CORTEX, I have contributed to multiple projects, including the DECISION–MAP, E-Fit, and REFRAME. My main focus and independent studies has been the REFRAME project, which has been an in-depth investigation of the task-based assessment tools of executive function.
