As we can see on the map, the synagogue (the dark blue Star of David) is in the centre of the downtown core. The Jews were also central members of the Victoria community; they ran a variety of businesses, and were involved in community groups such as the fire brigade and the freemasons. Additionally, the synagogue is located in the centre of many Jewish businesses and homes at the time. Saturday is the Jewish sabbath, known as “Shabbat” in Hebrew. As it is the day of rest, walking to synagogue is an important ritual to many Jews, especially more observant ones. Therefore, it makes sense that the synagogue is located within walking distance of as many people as possible. A trifecta of centrality!
