The first half of the project our fieldwork will focus on\u00a0K<\/i><\/span>a<\/i>k<\/i><\/span>ma<\/i>k<\/i><\/span>imilh<\/i> (Keith Island) in the centre of the Broken Group Islands – this is one of the many\u00a0ancestral sites in Tseshaht homelands. This location is also where Tseshaht Beach Keepers<\/a> have created a stewardship program that engages visitors to experience the Broken Group Islands<\/a> and Pacific Rim NPR<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n <\/p>\n The archaeological team is\u00a0privileged to have a chance to conduct excavations at\u00a0this important cultural site which has a currently document archaeological history of at least 5,000 years. This\u00a0village\u00a0was occupied full time up until the 1940s and was a location where several\u00a0older\u00a0Tseshaht community members grew up and regularly visited before the surrounding archipelago\u00a0became a national park reserve in the 1970s.<\/p>\n For the latter half of the\u00a0project at the Bamfield Marine Sciences Centre<\/a> in Huu-ay-aht territory<\/a>, we will be working in Huu-ay-aht\u00a0territory and\u00a0visiting some of their\u00a0ancestral places<\/a>\u00a0including the\u00a0Kiix\u0294in Village and Fortress National Historic Site of Canada<\/a>.<\/p>\n <\/p>\n To learn\u00a0a bit more about Huu-ay-aht\u00a0language and culture, please visit their very detailed and\u00a0helpful website<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":" Usually, we encourage visitors to witness the joint Tseshaht-UVic-Parks Canada\u00a0excavation on Keith Island but given COVID protocols, we will have more selective procedures on site.
