Interconnectedness of climate change and social justice

Objectives:

By completing the module, learners will:

  • Explore the dis proportionate impact on climate change on socially marginalized groups.
  • Understand the interconnectedness of social and climate justice
  • Critically engage in conversations around climate change and social justice

Topics1. Depth and Magnitude of Human Activity
– Explore the depth and magnitude of climate emergency. This topic will introduce learners to the current situation of the planet and where we are at.
Limits of our PlanetPlanetary Boundaries
 2. Terms associated with interconnectedness of climate and social justice
– Learners explore the terms such as intersectionality, climate apartheid, environmental colonialism and others by using case study and examples.
Language MattersCase Studies (Links included in the Language Matters activity document)
 3. Unequal limitations
– Learners start to reflect on how the limitation of the planet impacts different demographic.
Neighborhood Research ActivityBeyond colonial futurities in climate education  
 4. Systems Thinking and Climate Change
– Learners will explore how climate change conversation should be interdisciplinary and beyond the climate crisis.
Civic ActionThe Need to Introduce System Thinking in Teaching Climate Change
 5. Community and Classroom Connection
– Learners explore how they can engage with the community and bridge the community and classroom divide
