The Changing Arctic Climate: From Science to Scenarios

Abstract:
Climate change is enhanced at high latitudes, with the Canadian Arctic experiencing warming at a rate that is two to three times the global average. Assessing the impacts of future climate change, and developing adaptation plans requires targeted, scientifically sound information. However, there is often a gap between the information produced by climate scientists and the information needed by planners and decision makers. In this talk I will provide a brief overview of observed changes in Arctic Climate (and some implications of those changes), followed by some discussion of the need for quantitative information to make adaptation decisions and plans. I will note some issues that arise in constructing and applying climate change scenarios from climate model output, and conclude with some possible research directions that would bridge the gap between climate models and adaptation planning.
